I got this package in the mail from this girl who’s been a friend of mine for years, who had been holding on to this box for me, this little brown-paper box which Hillel had given me in 1986. There was something written on the box, and it said: ‘Anthony, you think what I feel and understand what I say. I love you. This is our year, 24. Hillel.’ I went out into my back yard, and I just sat there for a minute, and all of a sudden, I managed to get through all of those layers, and I got down to the real me. I started crying and talking to myself – and talking to Hillel. You know, “My Lovely Man” is about my love for Hillel and the fact that eventually I will find him.
